salustiano

Salustiano's paintings are a distinctive mix of Renaissance-inspired figures set against backgrounds of starkly bold colours. The result is resolutely contemporary with striking and thought-provoking imagery executed in extreme realism. Through his different series, the common intention of the artist emerges; while continuously seeking beauty, he intends to penetrate the inner world of the viewer and to awaken emotions within. The timeless portraits, laden with expressions of enigma, seek to go beyond mere representation and to meander towards the inner realm. The intensity of a gaze, the sweetness of a faint smile gently prod viewers into an unsettling position of ambivalence between proximity and distance, attraction and barrier, the familiar and unknown while oscillating back and forth across barely perceptible tension.

Salustiano was born in Sevilla in 1965, where he currently lives and works. He graduated from the University of Sevilla, in 1986. Since then, his works have been exhibited extensively internationally; in Spain, Portugal, Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Sweden, The Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Turkey, Israel, the United States, Canada, Mexico, Russia, Korea, Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Singapore, Japan, amongst others.

His works can be found in numerous private and institutional collections. The following are selected highlights: the Fowler Museum in Los Angeles, the Luma Museum in Chicago, the Vostell-Malpartida Museum in Cáceres or the Dalai Lama Foundation.
